Olympics
Ok, I have a minute here to share some of my interesting thoughts and questions about the Olympics:
1. The Olympics make me stay up way too late. WAY TOO LATE. I got caught up in the women's gymnastics finals last night--honestly, I had never heard of most of these girls before this event, and I really can't relate to anything about them--I mean, I have nothing in common with short people who are very muscular and can throw themselves into the air and land in the splits. And who can really make a fashion statement with metal hair clips--sometimes TWO rows of clips. To this lack of hair clip fashion sense, I would add that I have never been an award-winning athlete, although I am a really good speller, won state in debate, and can eat more chocolate chip cookies than anyone else on the planet. Yep, I deserve the gold for something.
2. What is Michael Phelps listening to on his Ipod?
3. After watching the men's gymnastics, Luke informed me that the Japanese/Chinese/Korean athletes are not able to smile. I mean that literally. He told me, in his "I've researched this so you can trust me" voice that they physically can't smile, and that is why they don't. Interesting.
4. Do you have to wear a bikini to play beach volleyball? I just don't get this "uniform." Why don't the pieces move about when they play? Do you really want to land in the sand wearing next to nothing? Someone help me out here.
5. Finally: what's your favorite Olympic moment so far? Has anything made you laugh? Cry?

1. Yes, we stay up way too late, but I figure it's 2 weeks out of four years. We'll sleep later... And you REALLY made me want a chocolate chip cookie!
2. I think somewhere you could find a playlist for Phelps.
3. Hmmm. I guess the women's gymnasts didn't inherit this disability. But it's good info to have.
4. Team USA appears to wear less of a bikini with every game. Oh, the women, of course. The men's team is almost dressed -- baggy t-shirts and surf-looking shorts. My daughter and I saw a pic of George W. embracing the women's team -- there was NO WHERE safe to put his hand. It was awful.
5. So far, it's mostly been swimming stuff. It never gets old for Phelps' mother -- she bawls every time. And no one cries alone in my presence! Ryan Lochte's dad just bawled when he won the gold for 200m backstroke. Precious. Today, it was sad (it was a recording -- I think from late last night). Some poor runner has had a stomach bug for 4 days, and barely got started (800m) before she just dropped out at the side and cried. Her last Olympics -- very sad!
And you know if the women wore shorts and t-shirts like the men, we wouldn't be seeing their every match. Babi
Is there Beach Volleyball on the Olympics?
I'm laughing because it's 1:01 am and I'm watching the Olympics. A riveting game of badminton, something I could be good at if I'd kept up my skills from ACU. Had to fast forward through Women's Wrestling. Something really wrong about that...
But by far the most fascinating in recent hours (after Michael Phelps story) is the Women's Weightlifting. First, those women made me feel downright petite. They are...well, something to see. For a women to lift 350 pounds over her head she has to have a bit of weight on her. And they wear skin-tight onesies too!
Re: volleyball, we're looking forward to hearing more about that kinesiology tape. Is it more like a nicotine patch or more like duct tape?
Re: gymnasts' hair clips. I wonder if maybe they need some other options--headbands, a Mary Lou cut (Oh--that reminds me of when you followed her into the bathroom at the Rose Garden! What a fun, sort of awkward, moment!) ...One of those fashion reality shows should take that one on!
I love cheering for our country, no matter what the event or who the person is. I love cheering for Brazil too, for that matter. I love the personal stories. I love the athletes who say a little prayer before their competition. I love come-from-behind victories and "photo-finishes". It's scary to see how much smaller many of the outfits are this year--even Australia's basketball girls! But overall, it is good for my soul.
Yes, Sarah is right. You can find his playlist online, and it is here: http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/The-mystery-of-Michael-Phelps-iPod-playlist?urn=oly,101129. Sorry, I can't seem to link here.
It sounds like he's mainly into rap music.
I just love the Olympics, as well. It doesn't matter what it is - I pretty much watch it all.
Loved all your comments. I'm missed several of the moments/events you've described, but boy oh boy, I've loved what I've watched.
My sad moment came last night during the floor exercise for the men's individual medals. The second guy up (I think from Brazil) had a PERFECT routine and at the end of his very last move, at the very last second, he fell. He just cried as he sat there. Then he cried all the way back to his seat. Then he hung his head in shame and cried some more. THAT I cannot take.
Trisha--I had totally forgotten about the Mary Lou Retton event--can't believe you remembered that. The only thing I really remember is that I felt like a HULKING GIANT next to her.
Off to more Olympics!
